I could use an upgrade on our old compact point-and-shoot anyway, so I'm tempted to just get one that shoots HD video (I would go with a Canon, Nikon, or Panasonic). However, I like the idea of a Flip-type HD camcorder as it fits in your hand better when shooting video. But I don't want to buy both.

I guess my main question would be whether or not, generally speaking, the point-and-shoot digicams shoot video at the same quality as the standalone camcorders. I have a nice DSLR, so our older compact digicam will suffice in its current role if I go with the camcorder (i.e., I'm ok with not upgrading the point-and-shoot if the camcorder is the better route).

Any issues I'm forgetting?

I have an Canon XL2 and GL2 which are both in standard def. I'm looking into getting an affordable HD Camcorder in the 00 range. I was interested in the Canon XA10, Sony NEX-VG10, or Panasonic HMC-40. How would these small HD tapeless camcorders match up to the XL2? Would any HD camcorder, even a high-end consumer grade, be inherently better than the SD Prosumer cams? Or is it all about the optics? My main goal is shooting something in sometimes low light conditions that will look well when burned to DVD and watched on a hi-def TV. Blu-Rays may be in the future too.

Well my local stores have camcorders that have HD and other special features, which I am not so familiar with. They are all under 200 pounds, which seems like a good deal, but I am not just so sure which to pick.

What I am looking for, since the main use of the camcorder would be for interviews:
Good color capture (not faded colors)
quality sound recording

So here are my 4 options (brands):
SONY
Panasonic
Canon
JVC

Which one meets my demands best, or are all of them good anyway?

Thanks!
Andy
