How do you get sound to come out of a TV when playing back Canon HF10 HD footage?

I cannot get sound to play back from my HD footage on the SD card in my Canon HF10. I have connected the camera to the TV - using the HDMI cable link and the sound cable link, both of which were supplied. The picture is perfect but no sound. The sound is on the file (I know that because I can play it back through the camcorder's own internal speaker). Thanks.

    HDMI carries video and sound, if you connect a separate cable for sound the processor cant decide witch one to give priority and you’ll have none. Use only the HDMI.

    Is the sound cable definitely connected to the correct place in the TV? It should be in the same section as the HDMI port, so they should all be together.
