Hey Dave. It depends on what you want to use it for. You can get a HD camera for less than 200 euros (250 USD). I would not recommend DVD or mini DV cameras as they are fairly outdated. HD is your bet ! Have a look at this article about making a film to guide you on the best equipment. Cheers!

A list of camcorder formats in quality,
1 Mini-dv, 2 Flash drive, 3 HDD, 4, Pen and paper, 5 Mini-dvd.
At the end of the day its your choice what you want, and the quality you want, Iain says that Tape is outdated, maybe he should read about how camcorders work and who uses what, I cannot think of many (if any professional) that uses flash or HDD camcorders, none of them in my area everyone uses Tape based camcorders, Why because of the quality, none of the manufacturers will stop making tape based camcorders, for many years. Flash and HDD cameras compress the video, to a huge extent, that’s why they can get many hours of video on a small drive. Compression, Equals reduced quality, that’s fact.
Out of your choices I would be looking at either a Mini-dv camcorder or a flash drive camcorder, Get out there and have a look to see what you can get for your money.
Good luck

You can’t go wrong with a JVC hard drive, out of my 3 cams the JVC leaves the others standing.
for a camera that you just want to take family videos with, some great inexpensive ones are just flash HD cameras. things like the flip HD, DXG-569V, kodak pocked HD cameras, etc. they are small enough to slip in your pocket, very easy to use, and never really pass the $300 mark. in fact some are as cheap as $70 and take great high definition videos.
i personally have the DXG-569V and i love it. it takes amazing quality video and with an 8gb SD card i can go for a week trip and not use up all the memory. i got it for $150 over a year ago, but i’ve seen it for sale now at $70. there are better ones though, the biggest problem with mine is that if you open the screen to see the video while you’re taking it, the battery only lasts about 20 minutes, but when i close the screen it goes almost 2 hours.
