my laptop does not have frewire port and need 1 for new HD Digital camcorder. Can I purchase an attached ieee?

Just purchased new digital camcorder but my laptop does not have firewire port. With out opening up laptop, is there something that attaches to USB to convert to Firewire connection?

    Hopefully your laptop has a PCMCIA or ExpressCard expansion slot – then you can get a card with a firewire400 port. The PCMCIA cards are cheap – the ExpressCard cards are pricey.

    A USB-firewire converter adapter will not work – the movie editor will not let it.

    If your laptop has a card slot, you can get a card that fits into the slot and has a firewire port on it.

    Your PC card slot is either the older PCMCIA, it is is one of the newer ExpressCard/34 or ExpressCard/54 slots. Cards with firewire are made for all the types of slots.

    If you do not have a firewire port or a card slot (like the Macbook Air), you are out of luck, but this is a very rare condition.
