please help! i want to get the canon hg 10 but i need to know about something!?

so i have a dell. it runs on microsoft. i was not planning on getting an expensive editing program. i can't afford sony vegas or anything else that costs money. are there any free down-loadable editing programs that will convert to hd mode on the computer for like.. youtube and stuff?

i am not professional at all. this will be the first camcorder i get. and all i want is to make some really nice high quality videos for school, and fun projects (short films/music videos..etc)

please help! what should i do?
