Sony Camcorder and iMovie?

I have a Standard Definition Sony that shoots MPEG file format that doesn't play on my mac or p.c., but it imports into iMovie I can't tell if it makes the quality worse (it is iMovie 09). I am buying a full HD 1080p camera and want to know if it will still be full hd when I export it out of iMovie in a .mov format.
