What should I get? Pentax K-X, or Canon HV30?

I'm looking to get a camera or camcorder for graduation. I'm leaning toward the K-X because of photo quality and 24p for videos + interchangeable lenses, but the HV30 due to Full HD, full manual video controls, and Mini DV tapes which are really high quality from what I've heard from friends with the HV30. But I'm in a dilemma, because I really want the best value. What do you think?

The answer is simple: get the K-X. It’s a great Camera, and has great video. You get the best of both worlds. The answer is simple: The K-X.

a camcorder is for video, so if you need video, get a camcorder.

You seem to prefer making videos more than stills. Get the HV30. If you’re willing to sacrifice a little on the video and have fabulous stills at the same time, get the K-x.

This is a tough question to answer, since there’s a camera and a camcorder. The K-X is mainly for photos. If you don’t know much about photography, I’d stay away from the K-X. It’s a DSLR camera designed for the person who knows a fair amount about photography, and is buying into their first DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera. If you don’t know what the F stop, the shutter speed or the ISO speed is, I wouldn’t buy the K-X. The K-X only has 24 FPS video, so it may be a bit choppier. This is for photos, not video.

Canon has been known for their great quality video for a long time. Though the HV30 is a 3 year old camcorder, it’s one of Canon’s best camcorders. It certainly can’t take pictures as good as the K-X, but if you’re just the average photographer, it won’t matter too much. This is for video, not photos.

All in all, if you want good video, go for the Canon. If you want good pictures, go for the Pentax. The Pentax might not be for you if you don’t know much about photography, but you might get into it one day. Remember that you need to buy lenses for the Pentax, since the camera doesn’t have a built in lens. So remember, Pentax = Good photos, alright videos, and Canon = Good videos, alright photos.

By the way, if you want to buy a good DSLR camera, I’d recommend a Nikon or a Canon. The lenses are generally better quality, there’s third party support. Though the Pentax may be cheaper, the Nikons and Canons are usually better.
