Why won't my videos work on windows movie maker?

I'm using a sony HD camcorder, and My videos will NOT work on windows media player or movie maker. I want to make better videos for youtube by using movie maker, but my camera can only upload straight to youtube. Is there any way I can convert the video file so it'll go in windows movie maker? If so, how do I do it?

    Generally Windows Movie Maker support .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv. If you use Vista it also support .dvr-ms.
